As you prepare for the next chapter of your academic journey, going through the college application process can feel overwhelming. From gathering essential documents to exploring scholarship opportunities, here are some tips for college applications and scholarship exploration, provided by an alumni of FDR class of 2020 and now a 2024 college graduate from Purdue University called Kenneth Liendo.

 College Application Tips

1. Academic Exam Results

One of the first steps in your college application is to prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) or ACT (American College Test). These scores often play an important role in admissions decisions, so it's essential to study well and aim for a score that connects with your target schools.

2. Transcript of Your Academic Records

Your high school transcript is a vital component of your application. It provides colleges an overview of your academic performance, including your grades and coursework. Make sure your transcript is accurate and reflects your achievements throughout your high school career.

3. Essays

Personal essays are your opportunity to showcase your personality, interests, and aspirations. Spend time crafting essays that reflect your unique experiences and values. Be creative and the best version of yourself, this is your chance to make a lasting impression on admissions committees.

4. Recommendation Letters

Strong letters of recommendation can set your application apart. Consider asking one or two teachers who know you well and can speak accurately of your strengths, achievements, and character. Provide them with your resume and discuss your goals to help them write more personalized letters.

Exploring Scholarships

In addition, financially, scholarships can significantly reduce the cost of attending college. Here are some to consider:

1. Athletic Scholarships

If you excel in sports, many colleges offer athletic scholarships. These awards not only recognize your talent but also provide opportunities for training and competition at a collegiate level.

2. Creative and Artistic Scholarships

If you have a passion for the arts, whether it’s music, theater, dance, or visual arts, look for scholarships specifically going towards creative talents. Many colleges have programs that support artistic students through grants and scholarships.

3. Academic Scholarships

High academic achievement can qualify you for a variety of scholarships. Research merit-based scholarships offered by colleges or external organizations that reward students with outstanding academic records.

What to Consider When Choosing Your University

Selecting the right university is the important decision that goes beyond just academics. Here are details to consider:

1.) Location

Think about whether you prefer an urban, suburban, or rural setting. The location can impact your lifestyle, access to internships, and the overall college experience.

2.) Campus Environment

Visit campuses whenever possible to get a feel for the atmosphere. Consider the campus size, the facilities and the accessibility it may have towards places.

3.) University Ranking and Accreditation

Research the university's ranking in a reliable source to make sure it is credible. Accreditation assures you that the education you receive meets the high, right standards.

4.) Course Content and Curriculum

Review the courses offered in your major and how they align with your career goals. Look for programs in which you can physically participate and internship opportunities.

5.) Sustainability and Campus Life

Consider the university's commitment to sustainability and environmental initiatives. Additionally, explore what campus life is like, clubs, organizations, and extracurricular activities can significantly fulfill your experience.

6.) Cost and Tuition

Be mindful of tuition rates and overall costs. Research financial aid options, scholarships, and the potential for work and study programs to help manage expenses.

7.) Entry Requirements

Make sure you understand the entry requirements for your chosen programs. Different majors may have different prerequisites, so be prepared to meet the criteria.

8.) Living Arrangements

Consider your housing options, on campus vs an off campus living can affect your social experience and your budget.

9.) Career Success

Research the university’s career services and alumni network. A strong support system can help a lot for internships and jobs after graduation.

10.) Scholarship Opportunities

Finally, investigate the availability of scholarships at the universities you’re considering. Many institutions offer their own scholarships based on merit, need, or specific talents.

By keeping these tips in mind and deeply researching your options, you’ll be more prepared to be in the college application process and select a university that is essential with your academic and personal goals.
